Last week I was taking about expat friendly New Year resolutions. The post got me thinking about how I can make 2016 count more. You don’t realise just how quickly the year pasts until you look at goals you set or projects you planned to do the same time last year. I feel so guilty when I haven’t achieved as much as I would have liked. It’s not nice feeling like you’re wasted a year.
Expat life can be really hard career wise. If you don’t live in a country that speaks English or you don’t live in a big city where there are plenty of job opportunities or you’ve simply decided to carve your own niche, it can be hard to get started.
No matter how motivated you are, working for yourself is always an uphill battle as you choose to do things that are easier, but not as enjoyable rather than follow you dreams. You often find yourself working to make ends meet as your career projects fall by the wayside.
So with that in mind, I’ve designed a watch word for 2016, something to keep me motivated to ignore the easy and embrace the dream. It’s very simply DO.
I have fallen into the terrible habit of talking about all the things I want to do and telling myself that I will eventually do them and then never going any further. It’s so easy to placate yourself by telling yourself that you will do something and soon enough the act of actually doing them no longer matters. You manage to fool yourself into a sense of anticipation and then it’s too late to do anything.
Since kids are on my rapidly nearing horizon, I want to lay the foundations of my mini ’empire’ before more important things take centre stage.
So here’s to DOING!!
